Volunteers helped with many aspects of the dig including
Removing turf
Excavating test pits and trenches
brushing, washing and cleaning the artefacts
Backfilling the test pits and trenches
And numerous other tasks
Some came from looking at the Festival of Archaeology webpage, others were members of the Lake District National Park Archaeological Society or the childrens’ branch. Several had seen the media coverage and applied, or heard about it through their association with The Lake District Holocaust Project.
During the first week, the volunteers were children from The Lakes School that is on the site of the dig. They also had an opportunity to experiment with some metal detectors.
