“I thoroughly enjoyed the Calgarth dig in July. I am writing a story about the Boys with the help of Rose and Trevor and it was fascinating to be part of trying to unearth the story, literally. It gave me time to think about what I was trying to do. I have read so many books and listened to countless interviews to try to find a way of telling an almost impossible story. But pulling of the turf, then digging for stones, parts of drainage pipes and fragments of a mirror made it all feel more real and gave me confidence.

The best bit was twice meeting a lovely lady called Joyce, who was a child on the estate when the boys arrived. She and her niece talked to me about the estate at the time and it has given me lots of to go on.”
